In your small "disagreement", know I don't find it a disagreement all. You made me realize I had erred in the post (which I have since rectified) and just wish to inform that the juxtaposition of the whole "black and white/grey" commentary will be the subject of an upcoming post about "compromising", an affiliated essay containing the tendency of people to refuse accepting that some things plainly just *are* black and white. I just wanted to let you (and anyone else wondering) know this so you know that your thoughts were very on target and appreciated. :) Thank you again for taking such time to comment so thoroughly.

Articles on Tolkien and "feminism" in particular will be coming in the near future in the form of many posts, something I look forward to with great delight. Thank you for such interest.Gwedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06208345211578648235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263892821917521939.post-30451351767062918782013-07-01T15:05:39.598-04:002013-07-01T15:05:39.598-04:00E.M.O. again!

I found it rather interesting though that I found myself disagreeing and agreeing with your points.

I think it's rather irrefutable that people do engage in this type of extremism with Tolkien's works and particularly his characters. Truth (but always fun to talk about it some more). What I found intriguing is how you described that this tendency of ours is in fact a method of changing Tolkien's works to fit our reality of *black and white*.

Why did this make me pause? Well, clearly someone who is engaged in this type of extremism is attempting to make the character black and white without "thinking about it," "putting the character in context," or "seeing both sides of the story." All of which you said. I agree. But what I am not sure about is whether we are trying to make a grey world black and white.

Usually, discussions of black & white and shades of grey hinge upon one's belief on Truth vs. truth and moral relativism. I liked your description of why we want things to be black & white: so we don't have to think about them and make decisions. I agree, those are compelling reasons why our modern society avoids shades of grey. But, on the flip side, it seems that many issues that should be black & white, right vs. wrong type binaries are purposefully being grey-ified by our society and confused. So that now, I don't know what is right or wrong anymore because everything seems to be acceptable to somebody, and really, it's just how it makes you "feel" anyways. Perhaps this is why I don't find myself agreeing 100%: I see that shades of grey are useful to blur moral lines, but also that black & white is useful in preventing thinking and decision-making. Hmm... can we have our cake and eat it too? ... Not sure, I'll have to think about this some more. But if we can, I would like it to be chocolate cake.

I LOVED your comment that Tolkien's values no longer exist in our world today and this is why we cannot understand/accept his characters without extremist interpretations. Absolutely! I think you should write an article on Tolkien and feminism in particular since I think this is a major sticking point for a lot of people but SO interesting once you think it through. And expand to include portrayals of male characters. Okay, I'll calm down.

Nice work! Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
